ALASKA LEGISLATION
& REGULATIONS

The health care industry touches many aspects of public policy and ASHNHA monitors a broad spectrum of issues. During the state legislative session, ASHNHA convenes a Legislative Committee to guide policy decisions and holds a weekly meeting for health care lobbyists and government affairs staff.  ASHNHA also hosts a Legislative Fly-In event in February each year in Juneau.

Medicaid

Medicaid providers health coverage and long term care services for low-income Alaskans. Medicaid serves Alaska’s most vulnerable: children, seniors, people with disabilities, pregnant women, and very low income or working poor.  234,763 people are covered by Medicaid in Alaska (Nov. 30, 2020) This includes 62,524 covered by Medicaid expansion. Over the past 5 years, enrollment in Medicaid has increased due to Alaska’s economic recession, Medicaid expansion, and more recently the COVID pandemic. However, State general fund spending has remained flat while federal spending has increased. Alaska has been able to provide health care to more people in need for little additional cost.
