2021 Quality & Patient Safety Awards Alaska’s Healthcare Champions This year’s awards recognize individuals and teams taking progressive and effective steps to improve patient care and outcomes. During the pandemic, Alaska’s care providers have worked through incredibly challenging circumstances to deliver high-quality patient care programs, foster a culture of patient safety, and support sustainable improvements in quality and patient safety. Keynote Speaker: Dan Shapiro, PhD A Systematic Big Data Approach to Burnout Our work reveals that while burnout is ubiquitous in healthcare, the local details matter and further, those details can be carefully measured, prioritized, and acted on. This high energy talk will present a systematic method for addressing burnout locally. Dr. Shapiro is the Vice Dean for Faculty and Administrative Affairs at the Penn State College of Medicine. He is also the Garner James Kline Professor of Humanities in Medicine and the Chair of the Department of Humanities. Dr. Shapiro earned his Ph.D in Clinical Psychology at the University of Florida and went on to Harvard Medical School where he completed an internship and an endowed post-doctoral fellowship. His writings about physician wellness and the patient experience have appeared or been featured in the New York Times, the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Academic Medicine, and NPR’s All Things Considered. Shapiro has written three books, his memoir, Delivering Doctor Amelia, focused on his psychological treatment of a physician and led to his interest in developing systematic methods for improving wellness for physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals in multi-hospital systems.
