Policy and Advocacy

Undertaking state and federal advocacy efforts remain one of the most important roles of the Alaska State Hospital and Nursing Home Association in meeting the needs of its membership.

ASHNHA monitors public policy issues at the federal and state levels that affect hospitals and nursing homes.  The association takes action by providing comments and testimony to governing bodies, writing letters, participating in agency meetings, and developing collaborative relationships with organizations interested in Alaska’s health care industry.

ASHNHA members can participate in advocacy efforts in a variety of ways.

  • Invite legislators and candidates to your hospital so they may see firsthand what is happening and how the services you provide help improve the quality of life for your community.
  • Visit your elected officials in their local offices or in Juneau.  ASHNHA can help provide materials for the visit.
  • Make a personal connection with legislators so that when a health care issue comes before them, they know who to call for local information.
  • Participate in the ASHNHA Legislative Committee.

Healthcare will continue to be the focus of public policy debate and ASHNHA will continue to be a strong voice for our members.
